Abstract

Transgender people, that is, people whose gender identity or expression does not meet the expectations of the sex assigned to them at birth, are one of the most marginalized groups in Georgia. A negative attitude towards them and a strong transphobic mood prevail in the largest part of society, which puts transgenders in strong psychological and in some cases physical danger. The purpose of this article is to present a complete picture of the legal status of transgenders living in Georgia. In order to achieve this goal, in parallel with the review of the actual situation in the country, the national framework legislation will be analyzed, especially in the direction of legal recognition of gender, and attention will be focused on the main aspects that Georgia should work on in order to protect the rights of transgender people, taking into account international legal norms and best practices.
